Debra Cooper Burger
President & CEO

Debra Cooper Burger came to the Unionville Home Society in 2009 from St. Joseph’s at Fleming long term care home in Peterborough. While in Peterborough she facilitated the development and construction of the new St. Joseph’s facility and partnered with Fleming College to develop the first long term care teaching centre and the Institute for Healthy Aging.  She brings to her role as President and CEO more than 30 years experience in the health care sector including acute care nursing, occupational health and case management and administrative services in community and home care settings, as well as health care labour relations. Debra is a Registered Nurse and holds a Master of Continuing Education degree from the University of Calgary. Prior to moving to the Markham area, she was a member of the Central East LHIN Peterborough Collaborative; a panel member for the Peterborough Regional Health Centre Alternate Level of Care Assessment and Review and a member of the Trent University Nursing Program Advisory Committee.  Debra is an active volunteer and serves on the College of Nurses of Ontario Nursing Leadership Advisory Group and is Chairperson of the College Compensation and Appointment Council.


Cecilia Ho
Director of Finance


Cecilia has 15 years of progressive experience in finance environment, both in corporate and private settings.   Her expertise is in financial reporting, analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and management of finance/payroll departments.  

Prior to joining UHS, Cecilia‘s most recent employment was with Roots Canada Ltd. as Director of Finance.  Her dedication and process improvement skills have put structure and cost savings initiatives throughout the organization.   Cecilia also enjoys serving the community as a volunteer.  She has been on the deacon board of Cornerstone Chinese Alliance church for past 6 years.

Cecilia holds a CMA and CPA designation, and has a BS in Accounting and Business Administration.


Howard Dombrower, M.D., F.R.C.P.(C)
Medical Director

Dr. Dombrower graduated with a MD from the University of Toronto in 1993 and continued his postgraduate education at the University of Toronto obtaining a fellowship in Internal Medicine (1997) and Geriatric Medicine (1998). In addition, he has been appointed Instructor, in the division of Geriatric Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto.

Dr. Dombrower is also the Medical Director of the Apotex Centre Jewish Home for the Aged at the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care as well as the in patient rehabilitation program director in the Baycrest Hospital. At Baycrest he is also a consultant in the Baycrest memory clinic and Community Outreach Programs.

He is a consultant geriatrician at Markham Stouffville Hospital in York region where he runs a weekly geriatric clinic. If fact, many of the patients admitted to Union Villa are often seen by Dr. Dombrower first at Markham Stouffville Hospital. He also works as a General Internist at North York General Hospital and Sunnybrook and Women's Health Science Centre. He is a consultant for St. Johns Rehabilitation Hospital.

Union Villa is one of few long term care facilities in Toronto that has a Geriatrician on-site as the Medical Director. He has been with Union Villa since 1998.

Joanne Scofield
Director of Programs and Housing

Joanne has worked in the non-profit sector for over eight years and brings skills in organizational planning and development. She has held several senior management positions in community-based organizations.  Most recently, Joanne worked as Executive Director of the Doane House Hospice and prior to that as Program Administrator for the York-Durham Aphasia Centre.

Joanne has a rich background serving non-profit organizations both as a staff member and as a community volunteer. She is currently a Director at Family Services of York Region and volunteers with Newmarket Youth Justice Committee and Conflict Mediation Services of Downsview.

Joanne has a BA in psychology and Level 2 in the Certified General Accountant

Program.


 

Juanita Goodhand
Director of Care and Support Services

Juanita has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Ryerson University and earned her Diploma as a Registered Nurse at Durham College.

With a rich work history, some of Juanita’s major accomplishments are a strong background in nursing care, customer and quality service, having completed the Quality Service for Health Care Professionals program from the Disney Institute and have a green belt designation from Six Sigma


Mary Ruth Flood
Director of Community Development

Mary-Ruth is an accredited member of the Canadian Public Relations Society and has an extensive background in marketing, public relations and fundraising.  She is well-known for her creativity in fundraising circles in Markham and York Region and served as Executive Director of the United Way of York Region for 13 years.

She comes to UHS from the Markhaven Home for Seniors where she was President of The Markhaven Foundation. Her skills in organizing and implementing fundraising campaigns, direct mail, special events and promotional activities has brought her much success, and she has won several awards for her printed materials, multimedia presentations and events.
